Me and Ed Here

Submitted on 01/13/2019 at 7:16PM by JarJarJedi
Me and Ed here
have played over ten thousand
serious games a'chess
on this porch

and seen twice as many days
end over there, above
that tired old cornfield.
Yessir, we never
miss the stars, 'specially
when they're young, when
they first get their shine
in these clear Kansas nights.

There ain't nothin' so
pretty or promisin' as a star
burnin' early in the night.

And we've watched that field
take the abuse of two
setsa' young kids playin'
in it. Now there ain't anythin'
quite as important as those runnin'
games the young folks play, so
I guess that more than
just a few kernels of corn
has grown from that dirt.

And, y'see here
I just put Ed in check.
I guess I've made that move
a thousand times, and Ed
I guess he won't ever win
-- ain't that right Ed?
But that's just fine
'cause me and Ed here
thank the stars
for the chance to play.

Well, Ed, loser sets 'em up.
